Thursday 19th July – bike ***** Basingstoke Canal – Brookwood to Farnham – sunny and hot.

JUST HAD OUR 1000th NIGHT IN OUR MUCH LOVED VW KOMBA CAMPERVAN :)

Quiet night by the Basingstoke Canal and woke to another sunny and hot day so after breakfast we set off up the canal on our bikes at 9.30. You ate straight off in one of the prettiest sections of canal we have ever cycled, Deepcut as it raises steadily upwards with several locks. You have a main railway line one side but it is all wooded and the canal has crystal clear water which suggest very little boat traffic, Mag even spotted some large carp on the surface. I had a word with a lady jogger who told me that the boat traffic is limited due to difficulties getting water to the head of the canal! There were several large turning basins a meca for wildlife and the tow path was a car width track making cycling easy. We reached the town of Frimley with its houses backing down to the water and a large country park meaning several walkers on the tow path, some friendly some not so keen on cyclists even though we were going very slow! There was a large campsite by the water and a few large lakes joining the canal. We had a nice chat to an old mountain biker on the merits of electric bikes, they are definitely the future, the only trouble as far as I can see is the problem of re-charging them when we are away in the campervan and they are pretty heavy too! We were not sure where to turn around as the collapsed tunnel marking the canal end at Odiham was just a bit too far. We passed more built up areas, fishing lakes, army camps and even spotted the odd boat out on the water. Then we came to a bridge in the middle of nowhere and saw two security marshals sitting in yellow by the canal side stopping boats from mooring over a short section of canal, then I spotted a tall wire fence and discovered it was the end of Farnham airport and it was their airshow! We stopped by the fence and watched a few aircraft take off but nothing too exciting and it was too hot so we started cycle back relieved to be in the shade again. We made a couple of small detours through wooded areas which were very lovely and unusual to bike through pine trees near a canal! Then it was the downhill section through Deepcut and back to the van after being out over three hours covering 23 miles. It was then lunch in the van, relax in the sun before driving the 21 miles to have a nice evening babysitting the gorgeous Arlo while Mum and Dad go for a meal and pictures:) Home tomorrow after another top trop away in the lovely VW campervan!
